Steering Macro-Scale Network Community Structure by Micro-Scale Features
نویسنده
چکیده
Network science plays an increasingly important role to model complex data in many scientific disciplines. One notable feature of network organization is community structure, which refers to clusters of tightly interconnected nodes. A prominent problem is how to investigate the relationship between macro-scale modules that are retrieved by optimizing global network measures, and micro-scale structure that are defined by specific queries of the analysis (e.g., nodal features). By generalizing fundamental concepts of joint space-frequency localization to network theory, here we propose a flexible framework to study interactions between microand macro-structure. Similar to pointing and focusing a magnifying glass, the analysis can be directed to specific micro-scale structure, while the degree of interaction with the macro-scale community structure can be seamlessly controlled. In addition, the method is computationally efficient as a result of the underlying low-dimensional optimization problem.

متن کاملPore-scale Characterization of Carbonate Rock Heterogeneity and Prediction of Petrophysical Properties
Carbonate reservoirs, accounting for majority of the world’s hydrocarbon reserves, are well known for their heterogeneity and multiscale pore characteristics. The pore sizes in carbonate rock can vary over orders of magnitudes, the geometry and topology parameters of pores at different scales have a great impact on flow properties. A relatively simple way to integrate a set of digital pore spac...
متن کاملComputational micro-macro transitions at large strains for curvilinear physical directions
Biological tissues such as those involved in the eye, heart, veins or arteries are heterogeneous on one or another spatial scale and can undergo very large elastic strains. Frequently, these tissues are characterized by shell-like structures at the macroscopic scale and the physical material directions follow curvilinear paths. We consider a homogenized macro-continuum formulated in curvilinear...
متن کاملInfluence of pH and Chloride Concentration on the Corrosion Behavior of Unalloyed Copper in NaCl Solution: A Comparative Study Between the Micro and Macro Scales
The effects of pH and chloride concentration on the electrochemical corrosion of copper in aqueous sodium chloride (NaCl) media were studied at the micro scale using a microcapillary droplet cell and at the macro scale using a conventional large scale cell. Using an experimental design strategy, electrochemical response surface models of copper versus pH and NaCl concentration were constructed ...
متن کاملA multiscale lattice Boltzmann model of macro- to micro-scale transport, with applications to gut function.
Nutrient absorption in the small intestine cannot occur until molecules are presented to the epithelial cells that line intestinal villi, finger-like protrusions under enteric control. Using a two-dimensional multiscale lattice Boltzmann model of a lid-driven cavity flow with 'villi' at the lower surface, we analyse the hypothesis that muscle-induced oscillatory motions of the villi generate a ...
